Wanted: Life Experience

Published by writerbrian at 8:49 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

I recently have found myself unemployed. Perhaps, I should rephrase that; it’s not like I woke up one day to find my job had magically disappeared. I did however quit a job that I truly hated with every fiber of my being. Now I find myself trapped in a situation that is pointing towards hooker-ville. I have applied for at least two hundred different positions, some of which I honestly hope do not return the call. I have applied for so many positions, for what? To receive job offers for places I can’t get to, sexual advances I don’t want and rejections I don’t need. It is becoming very clear to me that I am not as marketable as I once thought, considering that even Starbucks has turned me away. I take that last one as a personal attack, considering I have supported them five days a week for the past several years. Now, as my bank account dwindles, I find myself asking what am I worth? I have many great life experiences to put in the books, but they don’t belong on a resume. When I look at my resume, the past seven years of slaving away seem rather useless. I had a friend look over my resume only to ask me, “Have you volunteered?”. Volunteered? Who has time to volunteer when you work 40 hours a week and go to school full-time? Someone forgot to mention to me that is was going to be required at some point that we all give up what little free time we have to build the volunteer section of our resume. Most of this is coming from bitter frustration, but I can’t help it. There was a point, when I was told to work hard and things would pay off. I guess they didn’t account for a bum economy, and the fact that getting a job is really just about who you blow and not what you know.
